The Women Development Cell, Institute of Law Nirma University organised a Panel discussion as part of the celebration of International Women’s Day. Hon’ble Ms. Justice Gita Gopi- Judge, High Court of Gujarat was the Chief Guest at the event. Dr Jyotsna Yagnik, Retd Judge and Clinical Professor at the Institute and Dr Heta Baxi, Senior Physiotherapist-Kameshwar Medical Centre were the other distinguished speakers at the event.
Hon’ble Ms Justice Gita Gopi referred the theme of this year: Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress and highlighted the pivotal role of investing in women to propel societal advancement. She emphasized the importance of collective contributions from both men and women to foster gender balance and address inequalities in society. She highlighted the historical oversight of the 15 women involved in the making of the Indian constitution and advocated for recognizing the contribution of women in the society. Additionally, Justice Gita Gopi advocated for incorporating conduct rules, including sensitization on law relating to sexual harassment of women at the workplace at educational institutions and enhance transparency.
Dr Jyotsna Yagnik stated that over the years women have been stereotyped as the homemakers. Cleaning, cooking, and raising the children are all thought of as “womanly jobs”. However times have changed and women of today are excelling in all walks of professional life as well. She expressed concern regarding the increase in cases of sexual abuse, domestic violence and discrimination still encountered by women and the need for women emancipation. Dr Heta Baxi underscored health challenges confronting women. She emphasizing the importance of maintaining a high quality of life and urged for regular exercise and timely medical interventions.
Earlier, Prof (Dr) Madhuri Parikh delivered the welcome address. The event was co-ordinated by Dr Bini S and Prof Taruna Jakhar, Assistant Professor’s at the Institute.
