XIII Edition of the Student’s Conference on the theme Evolving Frontiers of Warfare: Legal Challenges Beyond Traditional Battlefields

The XIII Edition of the Student’s Conference on the theme Evolving Frontiers of Warfare: Legal Challenges Beyond Traditional Battlefields was organised at Institute of Law, Nirma University on April 11, 2025. Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha, Vice-Chancellor, Dharmashastra National Law University graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Prof. (Dr.) Mehraj Uddin Mir, Former Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Kashmir was the Guest of Honour at the event. Prof. (Dr.) Madhuri Parikh, Dean and Director- Institute of Law, Prof. SP Rathore, Dr. G.V. Rao and Prof. (Dr.) Vikas Gandhi- Gujarat National Law University, were the other dignitaries at the event.

Prof. Manoj Kumar Sinha spoke on the foundational role of International Humanitarian Law when states fail to protect their citizens. He also stressed on the importance of legal principles, the legacy of the Nuremberg Trials, and the distinction between refugees and internally displaced persons. Prof. Mehraj Uddin Mir gave a compelling warning about the erosion of ethical values in modern conflict. Citing the Rohingya crisis and the Iraq invasion, he reflected on the 20th century’s violence and urged that humanitarian action must remain unbiased as the world faces potentially darker times ahead. The various sub themes of the conference included: Cyber-crime Law in Times of Conflict, International Humanitarian Law and Modern Naval Warfare, Legal framework for protect ion of whistle-blowers in conflict prone zones, Sexual Violence as a Tactic of War and Genocide, Biopolitics and War : The Weaponization of Humanitarian Aid in Conflict Zones, Effect of outer space militarization on civilian space systems, Refugees in the Age of Hybrid War fare: Navigating New, Battlefronts and Legal Protections

Earlier Prof. (Dr.) Madhuri Parikh delivered the welcome address. She stated that the Centre for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights endeavours to develop a research based and an inquisitive platform for students in this field of law and to keep up an academic response to the prevalent contemporary challenges in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law. Dr. Anviksha Pachori Centre Head- IHL delivered the vote of thanks.
