The Literary Committee at Institute of Law, Nirma University organised a short story discussion on “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson on October 29, 2025. The event aimed to foster critical engagement with the classic text and its social and psychological themes. The session analysed “The Lottery” as a commentary on blind conformity and the dark side of tradition. Participants discussed key themes such as normalised violence, loss of morality, and the conflict between individualism and collective utility. The discussion also examined Jackson’s use of irony, symbolism, and suspense.
The moderator concluded by emphasising the story’s continued relevance to issues like mob mentality and passive acceptance of injustice.
