A visit to Sabarmati Jail for the students studying the course on Criminology was organised by the Institute of Law, Nirma University on January 22, 2025. The visit offered a profound insight into life behind bars. The visit included guided tours of the male and female barracks, showcasing the structured and regimented routines of the inmates. In the male section, inmates were seen engaging in activities like cooking, plumbing, and computer learning, reflecting a disciplined daily schedule that begins with exercise, chores, and work assignments. The female barracks highlighted vocational training programs such as sewing workshops, along with cleaner and well-organized living quarters that included anganwadis and facilities for inmates’ children. The diversity among the inmates was notable, with individuals convicted of various crimes, including serious offenses under the POCSO and NDPS Acts, cybercrimes, and murder. International inmates faced additional challenges, such as language barriers and limited familial connections, underscoring the complexities of rehabilitation in such an environment. The conversations with the inmates provided a moving and enlightening experience to the students as they shared their personal stories, regrets, and hopes for a better future. The rehabilitative programs, including counselling and skill development, fostered a sense of optimism and preparation for reintegration into society. This visit offered a deeper understanding of the human element within the criminal justice system, emphasizing the importance of reform and the universal need for second chances. It served as a humbling reminder of the transformative potential of rehabilitation and the structured efforts required to enable inmates to rebuild their lives. Dr Devang Chhatrapati, Dr Shivani Mehta and Prof Gauri Tiwari accompanied the students at the visit.
