Distinguished lecture on “Inherent Bias in AI”

Centre for AI & Law (CAIL) inaugurated its series of Technology Friday’s on August 09, 2019 (3 pm to 6 pm) from the topic of current significance, namely, Inherent Biases in AI. The sessions on this topic were taken by Ms Usha Ramananthan followed by Mr Jaideep Reddy at Smart classroom, Institute of Law Building. It was a three-hour-long session including a question-answer session of half an hour at the end of the speech by each speaker

Ms Usha Ramanathan highlighted that, like everything, Technology also has its brilliant side and the side which needs to be controlled by giving examples of Internet and GPS (enhanced knowledge of geography among folks). They also gave a brief about UID system in India which created a platform for convenient ID system, with a unique number for every person, through digitization. They also talked about ubiquity (multiple databases instead of one) in a system which later she connected with AI.

He started with the concept of the state regulating the new technologies. The main issue he raised was regarding accountability and assignment of responsibility on default of AI. Following are some major points from his speech:

  1. Learning Algorithm programme
  2. Assigning gender bias to professions
  3. Sentencing Algorithm Bias
  4. Google’s Auto complete Bias (gatekeeper to information)
  5. Proprietary code (trade secrets of companies)
  6. Discrimination by non-state entities

Centre for AI & Law (CAIL) continued with its series of Technology Friday’s on August 22, 2019 (3 pm to 4 pm) from the topic of current significance, namely, Conceptualising Ethical Artifical Intelligence in India- Concepts of Ownership, Agency, Liabiltiy, AI and Related Legal Issues. The session on this topic was taken by Mr. Abhayraj Naik .

The speaker started with a brief introduction about AI and ethics. This lecture was focused on the concept of ownership, liability, ethics and other related issues in AI. The topic is as interesting as it seems and has various ramifications. Hence, there is a lot of scope for learning, relearning, deliberating, and researching in this approach of AI. The lecture was insightful and gave various aspects of the focus topic.

Centre for AI & Law (CAIL) conducted the third session of the series, Technology Friday’s on 23rd August, 2019 (3 PM to 5 PM). The session was on the topic of growing impact, namely, Data Privacy Issues in AI. The speaker for the lecture was Mr Arun Prabhu .

Mr Arun Prabhu had commenced the session with chalking out a basic understanding of AI and its subsets, such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Supervised (Human-in-the-Loop) & Unsupervised learning.Introducing the audience to Big Data, he gave an example of ‘marble-flow’, as to how any amount of scattered marbles (data) eventually gets patterned to thus give outcomes.

Key takeaways from the lecture included:

  1. A detailed comparing-and-contrasting between the General Data Protection Bill (GDPR; EU) and the Personal Data Protection Bill (PDP Bill; India). Said comparison was done on the basis of key features, grounds for processing and terminology.
  2. A brief summary of automated data processing and the ‘right to object’ as under GDPR as well as the Indian PDP Bill. Said right while won’t be explicitly mentioned in the Bill, would function mainly on an accountability framework between the data fiduciary and data principal.
  3. Anonymization under the current Indian laws, such as;

–        SPDI Rules [Rule 2(i)]
–        IRDAI Code of Conduct for Third-Party Administrators (TPA)
–        DISHA Bill (Sections 29, 34, 38)
–        Draft National e-Commerce Policy

The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Law (CAIL), Institute of Law, Nirma University conducted their 4th session of Technology Friday on 30th August 2019 on the issues covering Intellectual property with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence. Mr Zameer Nathani made the session a success with his great insights on the topic. 

He started by telling us about the sub-categorization of his presentation which covered 6 major topics-
