A distinguished lecture on “Police and Security Administration” was organised at Institute of Law, Nirma University on 10th February 2020. The session was addressed by Mr Ajay Tomar, IPS- Special Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad City.
He started the session by emphasizing on the pivotal role played by police and said that even before the courts, it is the police that provides immediate succour to people. He narrated the reference of police system during the times of Ramayana and Mahabharata. He also referred to “Yaksh- Yudhisthir sanvaad’ from Mahabharata and elaborated as to what drives him as a policemen. He shared his insights on police origin, power and human rights aspects.
He expressed concern that in our country common people are afraid of people. It had its origin since the Police Act, 1861 when it was believed that police must instil fear amongst people. However he opined that fear only needs to be instilled for hardened criminals and terrorists. He reiterated that trust between citizenry and police is a must in every society.
Mr Tomar also discussed D K Basu Judgement and the guidelines issues by Honble Supreme Court of India with reference to rights of arrested persons. In his address he also refereed to various Provisions of Criminal Procedure Code, Indian Penal Code and Indian Evidence Act.
Answering to questions by students, he discussed various issues related to cyber crimes and steps that can be taken for improving the police system in our country. He empasised the role of responsible citizenry in a country.
Earlier, Prof. (Dr) Purvi Pokhariyal, Director and Dean, Institute of Law, Nirma University gave her welcome address. She talked about importance of learning from the real work life experiences of Experts and urged the students to understand the nuances on the subject of Police and Security Administration from the distinguished Guest.
