Expert Lecture on Public Interest Lawyering at ILNU

The Institute of Law, Nirma University organised an expert lecture on “Design and Preparation for Initiating a PIL: Manner and Craft” on 14 October 2026 for VII and IX Semester students as part of the course Public Interest Lawyering. The session was delivered by Adv. Ronith Joy, an alumnus of the Institute and a practising advocate before the Gujarat High Court with nearly a decade of litigation experience. The lecture aimed to supplement theoretical learning by providing students with hands-on exposure to actual PIL petitions, case laws and legal documents, highlighting the process of identifying public interest issues, drafting petitions, framing legal grounds and selecting appropriate constitutional remedies.

Drawing upon his courtroom experience, Adv. Joy discussed the practical challenges of initiating legal practice, developing advocacy skills, managing litigation and building an independent professional identity. He emphasised the importance of preparation, ethical conduct and understanding the practical nuances of court proceedings. He also highlighted that PIL should serve genuine public causes and promote access to justice, rather than become a means of personal publicity or professional self-promotion. The interactive session offered valuable clinical learning opportunities and encouraged students to approach public interest lawyering with professional integrity, practical competence and a commitment to justice.
