An Expert Session on “Press Freedom in India” was conducted at the Institute of Law, Nirma University on January 20, 2025. Shri. Ajay Umat – Senior Editor, Ahmedabad Mirror was the distinguished speaker at the event. The lecture was organised for the students of Media and Entertainment Laws. The speaker stated that in 1946, after the end of a second world war, the United Nation at its very first General Assembly, adopted resolution 59(1) which states that freedom of information is a fundamental human right and a touchstone of all the freedom to which the United Nations is consecrated. The Indian constitution also guarantees Freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a). However, the same is subject to reasonable restrictions under Article 19(2). He discussed various landmark judgements of the Supreme Court, namely-Romesh Thappar V. State of Madras, Brij Bhushan v. State of Delhi, Sakal Paper (Pvt) Ltd. v. Union of India, Bennett Coleman and Co. v.  Union of India, Express Newspapers (Pvt) Ltd. v. Union of India. He also highlighted the Anuradha Basin judgement on Internet Shutdown and Shreya Singhal Vs Union of India which struck down Sec 66A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. He urged the students to think as to how have we progressed in the realisation of this fundamental human right to be realised regardless of frontiers and more particularly in the post truth digital era. He also expressed concern regarding fake news and the way it complicates public discourse. Fake news often exploits emotions and leads to knee-jerk reactions impeding rational discourse. He advocated the importance of enhancing media literacy, strengthening ethics training for journalists and promoting transparency and accountability within media organisations. Earlier Dr. Vikas Trivedi delivered the welcome address. The session was coordinated by Dr. Sachin Sharma.
