The Institute of Law, Nirma University hosted a guest lecture on “Private Defense in Criminal Law and Subjective Interpretation” on September 23, 2024. The lecture was delivered by Professor Dr. Anjani Singh Tomar, Professor of Law at GNLU, who thoroughly examined the provisions of private defense in the IPC and provided illustrative fictional examples to enhance students’ understanding of the idea.
Professor Tomar discussed private defense, focusing on legal provisions in Sections 34-44 of the BNS – Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The class engaged in discussions about general exceptions (sections 34-37), the impact of minors’ age change from 16-18 years, and the burden of proof (section 39). She also discussed Private Defense of Person (Sections 38-40 and 44) and Private Defense of Property (Sections 41-43), incorporating case laws, examples, and real-life scenarios.
The speaker employed hypothetical instances to translate academic concepts into practical contexts, so augmenting understanding and fostering critical analysis. Students gained a deep understanding of private defense in criminal law as a result of her detailed approach and captivating teaching style.
